Dr. Roth talks about the physical and mental stress coping training that medical professionals go through to maintain full wholistic patient focused support. Most patients needing a medical professional is either due to an accident or out of fear for a health challenge. But it’s often easy to forget that especially in a high stress situations medical surgeons/doctors/medical professionals are required to evaluate and make life saving decisions, which if they get wrong have very serious repercussions. Dr. Roth’s opinion is that working in the medical profession as a surgeon is a vocation rather than for the money or accolades.
Sadly, over 50% of highly trained US-based medical professionals have to first answer to someone else that has finance as the main priority rather than the patient. This extra stress/distraction for the physician when they need to evaluate and make a life sustaining decision can seriously waste time and compromise their ability to make the right choice. Fact: over 400 physicians a year commit suicide ~ this rate being higher than in the police force.
There is a flip side ~ within the medical industry and society as a whole. It seems that a greater sense of acknowledge change is vitally needed to once again allow the medical professional to fully focus their expertise, efforts and resources to the patient welfare. So, as a positive, this is actually the best time to be a physician in the history of man in Dr. Roth's opinion.
